Meraki Exhibit

One of the art events that I attended this semester was called Meraki, and it was held on December 8th from 5-7 pm. This exhibit took place in the Art Gallery on campus, and included 8 senior artists. The assignment that they were given in the beginning of the semester was a semester long project, one that challenged them to develop their own portfolio, and often times alter their thought process about the project. One thing I found interesting, that I immediately noticed walking into this exhibit was that all of the art consisted of photos. None of the pieces focused mainly on painting or sculpture, even though a few included those elements. Each of the artists in tis exhibit spoke about their own projects and the meaning behind each.

The first work that I noticed upon entering was Essence by Rachel Kingsley. It consisted of a series of photos, each including someone the artist new, and each person having different colors placed on their faces with white powder being thrown on them. The artist explained the meaning behind her series, in which she explained that the piece is about personality. The colors that appear on the faces of the people represent the colors that Rachel feels represents that persons personality. In addition, the white powder being thrown at each face, and the amount represents the way people project their personalities. For example, she explained that one of her friends colors were blue and orange, because she described her friend as being "firery, and having a spark to her" for the orange, and then also being calm and serene for the blue. The white powder on this person was not much, and Rachel explained that this is due to the fact that her friend does not really project her personality on to people she does not know, it takes time for her personality to show.

I found the majority of these projects to be interesting and thought provoking. Each artist displayed their individual style and thoughts throughout each of their works. Ranging in sizes, colors and mediums, I thoroughly enjoyed attending this exhibit. One of the pieces was even interactive, in which the viewer had to put on headphones to listen to what the people were saying. I found that to be an interesting twist and a unique way of tackling the assignment. I also enjoyed the meaning behind the title of the exhibit, because the definition is truly exemplified throughout each piece. Saadiq Coakely, one of the artists came up with the title, in which it means "to do something with soul, creativity or love; to put something of yourself into your work".
